DEBBIE GLIVAR ROBERTS is an award winning musical theatre expert with more than four decades of experience. Recognized as a gifted soprano vocalist she has appeared in more than 150 musical productions, concerts, television specials and recordings throughout the United States and Europe.  Debbie studied classical and Broadway voice with two of New York's finest vocal coaches, Felix Knight and Marni Nixon.  As a musical and vocal director, conductor and musician, Debbie has worked with students of all grade levels and ages.  Her passion for inspiring and teaching children has lead her to become one of San Diego's most highly sought after voice and audition coaches.
Debbie created her company, Broadway Vocal Artists in 2001.  She now serves as the company's director. and specializes in the Broadway music library.  Debbie teaches the simple, step-by-step easy tools required to maximize vocal talent while minimizing anxiety, resulting in well-rehearsed and stress-free musical theatre auditions, callbacks and casting.  Ms. Roberts’ students currently appear on Broadway, film, television, recordings, professional and community theatre as well as school and church productions and performances.
Debbie was bitten by the theatre bug when she was cast as Goldilocks for her second grade class production at Cadman Elementary in San Diego and later plucked out of her third grade class to sing as a soloist with the school's chorus.  From there she performed continuously throughout middle and high school.   She studied all aspects of musical theatre at one of the country’s most revered children’s theatre programs, San Diego Junior Theatre.  There she competed and was chosen for their first repertory company, The San Diego Junior Theatre Repertory Players, the precursor to that group's Confetti.  Immediately after completion of the program she was invited to become a teaching artist there.  While in college, Debbie performed in a myriad of professional musicals and became a musical theatre instructor.  At age 18 she was invited, without an audition, to sing as the youngest member of the internationally acclaimed San Diego Opera Chorus where she performed for four seasons until she moved to New York in 1977 to pursue her lifelong dream.
In New York Debbie studied classical and Broadway voice with the lead tenor of the Metropolitan Opera, the incomparable Felix Knight, who also starred as Tom Tom in Laurel and Hardy's classic film, March of the Wooden Soldiers.  Debbie also studied the Broadway style of singing with film legend Marni Nixon, the celebrated vocalist who was the on-screen voice for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Deborah Kerr in The King and I.  Ms. Nixon also played the role of Sister Sophia in Sound of Music  with Julie Andrews.
Debbie has performed with regional theatre companies on both coasts. As a member of the prestigious New York Choral Society, she performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and on PBS television and the RCA recording of A Holiday Celebration with Peter, Paul & Mary.  Debbie appeared at the Salzburg Music Festival in Austria where she sang in two operas and chamber music concerts with I Cantori di New York. She is a member of Actor’s Equity Association (AEA) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA).
Debbie’s musical theatre expertise has brought her to positions as Founding Musical and Vocal Director for the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center’s Kroc Kids, Founding Director of the Joan B. Kroc Children's Choir, Children’s Theatre Workshop Director for the renowned New York summer stock theatre company, the Mac-Haydn Theatre,  Teaching Artist for San Diego Junior Theatre, Artist In Residence with Young Audiences of San Diego and vocal coach for numerous high school and community theatre projects.
The  life-changing day of September 11th, 2001 inspired Debbie to write, produce, direct and choreograph the musical, U.S.A. Hooray!, a rousing journey through American history.  This heartwarming production, offered to schools by Young Audiences of San Diego, introduced hundreds of students to the casting, rehearsal and performance process while educating teachers in the process of creating a musical theatre production.
Debbie has presented musical theatre audition workshops for schools and children’s theatre companies.  Without a reference book to offer their students, drama professionals have encouraged her to write a book on the subject.  With the publication of her upcoming book she looks forward to teaching students the steps to presenting the most successful, stress-free musical theatre audition possible.
Debbie Glivar Roberts is married to acclaimed athletic trainer Larry Roberts.
